Al was born in Brownsville, Texas, one of six siblings, lost his mother at a tender age of 5 years old. His beginnings were difficult and impoverished. He spent his years as a young boy working in the fields of South Texas picking tomatoes, peas, beans, corn, okra, cabbage, lettuce and cotton.

By the age of 14, Al possessed a restless desire to one day do something special with his life. He would dream about escaping those hot blistering days in the fields. He knew that there was a better way. He lied about his age and one week before turning 16 he hitched a ride to Harlingen, 30 miles away and enlisted in the service. He served his country for 22 years and spent the last half of his career serving in Special Operations Units as a US Army Airborne Ranger and Green Beret.

In 1968, Al volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam and requested assignment to a Long Range Reconnaissance Unit. He served with Company "F" 58th Infantry (LRRPs) and Company "L" 75th Rangers of the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles). The unit conducted combat missions into the Northern most part of South Vietnam (the border with Laos and the Ashua Valley). Those missions were launched from fire support bases and one of those bases was named Eagle's Nest. To honor the memory of those that gave it all, Al chose to name his company Eagle's Nest International and his website
